Earlier today Roomlr and SanomaVentures announced they have reached agreement on an investment by the latter. Roomlr is an Amsterdam based international search engine for holiday rentals.
Roomlr is one of the latest additions to the strong Amsterdam scene of travel related startups like Booking.com (hardly a startup anymore) and Travelbird. The company was founded in 2013 by Bas Lemmens, who was previously involved in Booking.com, Easytobook and Isango. Booking vacation rentals online is becoming increasingly popular, but is not as well developed as booking hotels or flights. With its database of 1.4 million locations, Roomlr aims to change this and offer an easy alternative for finding a holiday home or apartment anywhere in the world.
Roomlr has partnered with a large number of vacation rental providers in the travel industry like Belvilla, HomeAway, Housetrip, 9flats and Interhome. The wide range of rental options as well as the simple search and availability across platforms is what sets it apart from the existing offering. Lemmens: “Our aim is to make it as easy to find and book a holiday home or apartment as booking a hotel. With SanomaVentures as an investment partner, we have even more resources at our disposal.”
Herman Kienhuis, investment director SanomaVentures explains his interest and eventually investment in Roomlr: “Travel is the biggest e-commerce market in the world and it’s still growing fast, particularly online booking of holiday rentals. Backed by the valuable experience of Bas and his team, Roomlr has developed a platform which helps the international public find a suitable holiday location.”
Today’s funding is the second investment by SanomaVentures this year, after local shopping review site Wugly. The Finnish firm was very active last year too, which is why we interviewed Kienhuis.
